136: How to Communicate Better with your Teams with Tyler Herd

In today’s episode of Make It Happen, I sit down with Tyler Herd and talk about communicating within teams. Communication makes companies tick so it’s always good to learn more tips. Also don’t miss a few of my favorite things where I talk about finding ways to savor the holidays!

(00:57) Can you please help me understand social media algorithms at a better level?

There are two algorithms going at a time when you post. Based off engagement with post it will push it out more. The second algorithm is applied to a specific page you are posting on. So you can have a hot page but it may hit the other algorithm poorly and it then won’t reach as many people.

(03:03) Number one: You are more likely to go viral if you if you post a topic within your market with a narrowed in target audience.

(03:28) Number two: evaluate the time of day that your post gets more views and try to post within that time frame.

(03:45) Number three: don’t give up. It may take a while to wake up your page. Don’t give up and be consistent. The platform needs to know you will be consistent with your content.

Guest Speaker Tyler Herd:

  • (05:33) Tyler is a speaker and a coach.

  • (06:46) Communication is a big problem in companies today. There is a reason there are so many books on leadership and communication. Some people may say the topic has been oversaturated, but people are still focusing on it and reading that material.

  • (07:37) People don’t know how to communicate. People believe they will be great parents because they have learned from their parents before them. Then they have children and realize it’s not that easy.

  • (08:45) Money is similar. It’s a fact of life but it’s still a problem.

  • (09:12) We take communication for granted because we do it all the time.

  • (09:30) As leaders’ words matter and we need to use them wisely.

  • (12:21) We need to understand people are all different and everyone communicates differently.

  • (13:16) A leader is different than a boss or manager.

  • (13:27) Do not use a blanket technique for your team. Give more than you take from people.

  • (14:19) When was the last time you served the people on your team just because? This lets you get to know people better and you understand then what they need.

  • (15:26) What words or phrases to use when you are in tricky situations with team members?

  • (18:39) Tyler likes to lay out the facts and then asked the employee how they see things, so they feel valued, and he just wants to understand.

  • (21:25) Tyler gives his keys on how to be a better leader by being a learner

  • (23:58) Michelle asks about the importance of a company culture.
